A mentoring relationship is one where a person teaches you ( knowledge impartation and shared skills) what he/she knows in order to enable you achieve your goals in a specific area with greater ease.
However, some mentoring relationships do not work out for the following reasons:
Insecurity of the Mentor, difficulty in the relationship, inability to teach … (teaching is a gift) and ego on either part.
“A good mentor doesn’t act like he knows it all, he refers you to someone who is more equipped in certain areas where he is incapacitated”
It is also important to note that a Mentor is not necessarily older than you chronologically. He/She just has to have more experience and knowledge and be willing to share.
Hence the concepts of Peer mentorship and Reverse mentorship.
Whether you are the Mentor or the Mentee, put a value on the relationship and show up prepared!
Have a great week.
